Marvel Comics Avengers: X-Sanction #2 Story: Jeph Loeb |
|
With our podcast review of issue #1, I thought I might as well follow up with a review of #2. Why not?
We pick up again in the middle of the fight between The Avengers and the Lethal Legion. This issue, it’s Iron Man vs the Living Laser. Iron Man wants to know how the LL escaped so easily. Laser says an EMP hit their caravan, so they split. Seems fishy to me. Iron Man sees Redwing flying solo and decides to follow.
I don’t trust that bird.
Back on the boat, Cable remembers some quality with a young Hope. The daydreaming is interrupted as Iron Man arrives. Thoom! Cable gets the jump on Tony with some armor that uses Stark Tech, but it’s from the future. That old trick again?
The battle moves out of the boat and into the water. Tony finally overrides Cable’s armor and hits him hard.
Hit so hard, Cable daydreams of Hope again. Back in the present, Iron Man is telling Cable how all of Iron Man’s armor is based on his original data code. Unless it’s based on the Askani language, something Stark won’t hear for thousands of years. Thousands? Iron Man shutdown. Cable: 2, Avengers: 0.
Iron Man wakes up on the boat in a chair just like Cap. How many of these does Cable have? The Rulk gets the drop on Cable and shoots him in the back with one of the many future weapons lying around. While he’s down, Cable daydreams of Hope yet again as he appears to go full Techno.
So why is Cable attacking the Avengers again? Oh yeah, we don’t know. The only thing he’s working off of is what Blaquesmith said last issue. I’m sure Jeph Loeb has something, but let us know. Loeb likes to drag this stuff out, I hope it’s semi-worth it.
There are plot holes large enough to fit a mysterious tanker through. Cable only has 24 hours, but he has time to jump to the future to get ahold of future Stark Tech? Where did this death tanker come from? How about those X chairs he keeps the Avengers in? With only 24 hours, does he really have time to capture the Avengers to grab more intel? If he gets his intel, will he even have time to do anything? And why do The Avengers enjoy walking on dark boats?
Remember in the Terminator when the T-800 landed in the past, grabbed some clothes and a bunch of guns and went out to look for Sarah Connor? That’s how Cable should do it. He doesn’t have time for these games. This is his “daughter” we’re talking about.
There were only two things redeeming about this book: Cable’s moments with Hope, and Ed McGuinness’ art. He knows how to draw dynamic superhero battles. I’d even say this issue has stronger art than the first.
This comic screams 90s: zero plot and great art. The only things missing are a Punisher appearance and a Chromium cover.
I give this issue 1 Magnifico! out of 5.
