DC Comics Blackhawks #5 Story: Mike Costa |

So here we are almost at the end of this comic’s run. I actually think it’s a shame that this title is being cancelled. The story is a fun military scifi adventure. Sure you could draw comparisons to Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. team but I’m going to table that issue since I really don’t care about it.
The issue opens with Wildman and Canada landing on a space station controlled by the new cyber life forms. In the previous issue they had escaped “Mother” by killing her—at least it appeared she was dead, they then boarded a shuttle that was preprogrammed to launch to the secret space station.
The station turns out to be a kinetic projectile gun. Mother appears live and well to Canada and Wildman to tell them that she has shut off the oxygen filters and the heat there by suffocating and freezing them. To add insult to injury she decayed the orbit there by crashing the station on the planet. Mother gives Wildman and Canada a choice to join her group by letting this nanite cloud basically assimilate them. Their bodies would be destroyed but their physiology and most of their consciousness would be saved to disk for the most part.
Wildman asks Mother if he and Canada might have a few minutes to talk amongst themselves about their decision. She agrees like a moron—not unlike a villain revealing his entire plan for world domination to the captured hero, hubris be dammed. The plan that WIldman hatches is to fire the kinetic projectile down onto the “city” of the cyber beings. Canada is against this because this would effectively wipe out a new life form which is wrong. WIldman disagrees and fires the weapon. Mother is displeased but nothing can be done. The city is leveled and the station crashes through the atmosphere.

In the end Wildman visits one of the other Blackhawks that he was involved with, the awesome form of involved, in the hospital. She’s unconscious from sedation, he speaks with her for a moment and then leaves. The issue closes with Mother infiltrating her head.
As I said, I really enjoy the Military SciFi genre. There’s not a lot of that in comics at the moment. There’s not much room after all the zombie and vampire books. Another huge plus for the Blackhawks was having Cafu do the art. The previous artists weren’t bad—Cafu I feel is much stronger.
The surprising thing to me is books like Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E. and The Savage Hawkman weren’t cancelled yet this book was. The 8 issues that Blackhawks will run will make a nice trade and I can see this book working in the future as various mini series. I just hope they aren’t shoe horned into some crap “Event”. Thankfully DC Comics isn’t known for putting out crap Events, right Grant Morrison?
